The Arts and Culture Plan was a key strategic initiative led by South Australian Premier Steve Marshall. Lead consultants were Tony Grybowski, former CEO of the Australia Council, and Graham Gherashe.

About this project

Following extensive community and industry consultation, the Arts and Culture Plan South Australia 2019-2024 was developed to guide the growth of and investment in the state’s leadership in the arts and cultural sector.

Dr. Sarah Barns from Esem Projects delivered key strategic research input to the Consultant Report, facilitated a number of arts and community sector workshops, and supported the lead consultants in delivering final recommendations delivered in the Plan.

Key inputs

  • Over 2,500 voices, opinions and survey responses are captured in this plan.
  • 600 people attended town hall events in six locations – the Barossa Valley, Mt Gambier, Port Augusta, Adelaide, Port Adelaide and Goolwa.
  • 200+ interviews and seven focus groups were conducted with arts practitioners and organisations across all art forms, in addition to government representatives, industry groups and educational institutions.
  • 1,800 people responded to the Arts Plan 2019-2024 survey.
  • The International Federation of Arts Councils and Culture agencies provided information on international best practice.
